What I offer

Knowledge and skill

I specialise in Humanities and Social Sciences and the skills necessary to study them.  I have taught Teacher Training, History, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology, International Relations, Study skills, and World Powers at GCSE, A Level and especially on Access courses.  I have done this over 29 years and acquired extensive pastoral and study skills, and can apply these to a range of subjects.

An Improvement in your work

I know the academic process well and have a well-developed capacity to help students improve the quality of their work.  I can help you deepen your understanding and write more effectively.  I can also help you develop greater confidence by generating a supportive environment to turn your potential into ability.

 Quality not quantity

I see a relatively small number of students for weekly tutorials (6-8) and occasional sessions devoted to essay and personal statement work.  Money matters, but my real motivation is to continue to engage with people and ideas.  With a small number of tutees, I can enjoy my work and bring greater interest to yours.

Friendly and collaborative

I'm friendly, interested and care about what I do.  I look to develop a collaborative approach.  I will take you and your work seriously,  prepare for sessions, and meet you with energy and interest.  In return, I ask that you share the planning of our sessions, and communicate your learning needs clearly and in good time.

Who I can help

My knowledge and skills are suited to most students taking GCSE, A level and undergraduate study.  My sympathetic and open approach has been especially helpful to those who may feel daunted by academic work.

Where I work

I work from my home in Hackney within easy reach of most North and East London Boroughs.

Deciding if we want to work together

To talk about these things why not come for a free introductory session to decide if we want to work together.

“Bernard taught me Access to HE Politics and International Relations last year after a relatively long hiatus from education. Probably the most likeable and knowledgeable teacher I have ever had, Bernard helped me get back into the swing of things while also encouraging and challenging me. A teacher who fully understands that patience and recognition of a person's strengths is the best way to nurture their potential. I now study Politics and Sociology at a Russell Group university. Brilliant teacher
